* Please note that as with
anything, the more you practice, the better you get. So,...
PRACTICE,
PRACTICE, PRACTICE ! ! !
Articulation:
- If you do not already have one, ask for a list of
words, phrases or sentences with your sound in them. Once you have this,
practice them with your family everyday.
- See how many times you can hear your sound when
you speak and be sure to say it the way your speech teacher has taught you!
- See my articulation page for more game ideas.
Language:
Everyday is language therapy. For example:
- When you go to the store, name all the
vegetables, fruits, meats...you see.
- Name all of the things that you see that are
green, shaped like a square...
- Describe how things around you look (shape, size,
color, smell, sound, size, feel).
- Pick a word and name all the other words you can
think of that rhyme with it.
- Choose two items and then name at least one way
each how they are alike and how they are different.
- Read books to each other and together!
- Talk and be sure your message is clear and you
use good grammar!
- Name synonyms (words that mean the same things
ex. sweat/perspire, silly/funny...), antonyms (words that are opposites ex.
on/off, empty/full, absent/present...), homophones (words that sound the same
but are spelled differently - blew & blue, night & knight, hole & whole, bored
& board, skirt could mean the piece of clothing or to avoid something...),
multiple meaning words (words that are spelled the same, but mean different
things ex. blue could either refer to the color or the feeling, )
Fluency:
- Take a deep breath and speak using the air in
your lungs. Don't push the words out when you run out of air, BREATHE!
Take breaths at each pause in what you are saying. When reading breathe
at punctuation marks.
- SLOW DOWN when you are speaking!
- Say your sounds gently!
- Use the strategies you have been taught and use
them when you speak, read, talk on the phone...
- Practice each day as often as possible.
Pragmatics:
Introduce yourself to someone new (Check with your
parents before you talk to strangers) and ask his/her name... and remember
it!
Share information with others.
Be sure you listen to and respond to what they say.
(Be sure to remember it!)
Share jokes (Tell them and be sure you understand
why they are funny - or at least supposed to be funny).
Use and understand figurative language (idioms,
metaphors, similes)
