Reading and Word Work

This year we will explore literature with a new mission. In the past we have been working hard to learn to read. Each day the students had lessons and drills on how to use the skills that were introduced. Now in third grade we will continue that work in addition to building their independent reading skills.
As the boarder of this page depicts hot air balloons, our reading will take us to new and different places. We will read fiction, non-fiction, news articles, poetry, and drama. Readers Theater will be a class favorite I predict.
I challenge each student to read at
least 20 minutes each night. They can read to themselves or another member of
your family. Make sure you record the time. There will be special activities for
this school year to celebrate their independent reading successes.
Our first story of the year will be one filled with opportunities for the children to make connections between themselves and the text.
Check back here to see what skills we are working on, what spelling words are the topic of study, and what writing assignments we are editing.
