ATTENTION SENIORS:

As many of you are probably aware, most colleges and universities use the following criteria for admission decisions:  grade point average, types of courses taken, rank in class, recommendations from teachers/counselors and results on standardized testing.  If you have not taken either the S.A.T. I:  Reasoning Test or A.C.T. (American College Test) (or you have taken either of them before and wish to try and improve your score) you must register for these tests for either of the dates listed below.

Please remember the following points:

You register for:  S.A.T. tests online at www.collegeboard.com

                               A.C.T. at www.actstudent.org

1.      Registration must be completed on-line.

2.      You are totally responsible for the timely filling out of the forms and mailing...the Guidance Office does not register students nor send out the application forms.  We will aid you with completing the registration forms.

3.      Most colleges require standardized test results for admission.  If there is any doubt, take the test! Many students ignore this and find out too late that they needed results on this test for admission.

4.      S.A.T. II: Subject Tests are given November 1, December 6, and January 24.  Check college catalogues to see if you are required to take them.  You cannot take the S.A.T. I and the S.A.T. II on the same day.

NOTE:  The high school library and guidance office have a variety of S.A.T./A.C.T.  review programs and books that you may access.

PSAT

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2009

7:30 am

CHS Cafeteria

As a practice for the SAT I exam, which many of you will take in the spring of this year and/or in the fall of your senior year, the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) will be given on Wednesday, October 14, 2009.  The exam will be given at 7:30 am in the Catskill High School Cafeteia.  The fee for this exam is $13.  Students may register by paying the fee and signing up in the Counseling Center with Mrs. Broccolo by Friday, October 9th.  When you register, you will be given a PSAT review booklet.  Please have exact change for registration or bring a check made payable to "CHS".

Reasons for Taking the PSAT/NMSQT

  1. If you are planning on attending college, you should take the P.S.A.T.

  1. This is the only test used to determine winners of the National Merit Scholarships.

  1. This test gives you a preview of your S.A.T. I scores so that you can better plan your future and predict your S.A.T. I scores.

  1. This test also gives you practice for the S.A.T. I (which means you will be less nervous).

  1. When the test is corrected your scores will be reported to you.  You will also receive a copy of the test book and a report showing both the correct answers and those you gave.  This is a good way of identifying both areas of strength and weakness and serves as a good study aid.

Remember:

To sign up, bring your $13.00 to the Guidance Office and give your money and name to Mrs. Broccolo.  You will then be given a booklet that explains the testing procedure and contains a sample test.

If there are any questions, please see your Guidance Counselor.

Sign-up ends Friday, October 9th.
