  • Visit college campuses
  • Finalize list of prospective colleges
  • Request catalogs and admissions information
  • Obtain dates and registration materials for the SAT and/or ACT
     

September

  • Meet with admissions representatives that visit CHS
  • Make a list of registration deadlines for college applications, financial aid applications and SAT and/or ACT
  • Ask teachers and outside sources for letters of recommendation
  • Schedule a senior conference with your counselor; bring your updated Activities Resume

October

  • Take the SAT and/or ACT, if necessary
  • Work on admissions essays
  • Schedule a senior conference with your counselor, if you haven't done so already
  • Meet with admissions representatives that visit CHS
  • Visit or re-visit your top school choices; interview students, faculty and staff
  • Attend College Fair at Columbia-Greene Community College
  • Attend College Application Night at CHS
  • Official rank and GPA are distributed
  • Be aware of Early Action and Early Decision deadlines
  • Find out which Financial Aid applications are required for your college choices

November

  • Take the SAT and/or ACT, if necessary
  • Prepare your college applications and make a list of application due dates
  • Meet with admissions representatives that visit CHS
  • Find out which Financial Aid applications are required for your college choices
  • Attend Financial Aid Night at CHS
  • Obtain scholarship information from all available sources, such as counseling newsletters and online resources

December

  • Complete college applications, ideally by December 1st
  • Print the "FAFSA on the Web Worksheet".  This form will help you gather the necessary information to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov
  • Apply for outside funding and scholarships
  • Check counseling newsletter for updated scholarship information

January

  • Submit your completed FAFSA online as soon after January 1st as possible
  • KEEP COPIES OF ALL FORMS YOU SUBMIT
  • Parents:  It's helpful to get your income tax returns prepared early - schools may request them to prove eligibility for financial aid
  • Complete any other required financial aid forms
  • Attend CHS Alumni Visit to hear about College Freshmen's first semester

February

  • Senior mid-term grades mailed to colleges from the counseling center at the request of the student
  • Submit FAFSA online, if not already done
  • Rank your finalized list of colleges
  • Respond quickly to college requests for additional information

March

  • Submit tax forms to the financial aid office if requested
  • Contact each office to make sure your application is complete
  • Determine what else you need to do to establish and maintain your eligibility for financial aid
  • Watch the mail for your Student Aid Report (SAR)

April

  • Watch the mail for college acceptance and financial aid award letters
  • Compare financial aid awards you recieve
  • Submit copies of acceptance/denial letters to the counseling center
  • Make your final decision and send in a deposit by the deadline
  • Check with the college you have chosen to attend and obtain information regarding the details of signing and returning financial aid award letters
  • Notify other schools that you will not be attending
  • Watch for important deadlines at your chosen college (housing, financial aid, etc)

May

  • Continue to search for scholarships
  • Evaluate student loan lenders
  • Look for a summer job and save money for school

June

  • Complete senior post-high school survey and return to counseling center
  • Attend "Making College & Career Count" Presentation at CHS
  • Final transcripts are sent to chosen college
  • GRADUATION!
